Prenatal Testing

Most children born in Australia are born healthy. But about 3 babies in every 100 are born with a condition that will need medical care. Some of the more common conditions are:

  1. Congenital heart disease
  2. Disorders of kidneys and bladder
  3. Hip dislocation at birth
  4. Club foot (talipes)
  5. Down's Syndrome and other chromosomal Disorder
  6. Spina bifida and neural tube defects
  7. Cleft lip and/or palate
  8. Development Delay

Some of the conditions can be detected in pregnancy while others cannot. Screening tests and/or Diagnostic Test are available for some of these disorders. They are not compulsory - it is your choice whether or not to have these tests.

Before having any tests, you need to consider what you would do if a test came back positive or indicates increase risk. What would you do if a test showed your uborn child had an abnormality? Would you consider a temination of pregnancy? WouLd ou not consider one? Would you just like to know, even if you don't plan to do anything about it? Or would you rather not know?
